Join Midpen staff for a trail maintenance workday at Cloverdale Ranch on Wilbur's Watch Trail. This is a unique opportunity to work at one of Midpen's coastal properties. We will be removing vegetation from the vista point surface and maintaining trail drains and culverts. This is an opportunity to learn more about how we keep the trails accessible for users throughout the year. Staff will provide training on hand tool safety and guide volunteers in performing typical maintenance activities. This project is an excellent opportunity for first-time volunteers!

After the workday, while you're out on Route 1, we suggest visiting nearby Pigeon Point Light Station State Historic Park to check out tidepools and learn about the lighthouse's history.

Note special start time of 9:30 a.m. to allow more driving time, and end time of 2 p.m.

We will be focused on "brushing," trimming back vegetation in the trail corridor, on this mostly redwood-shaded trail. This is an opportunity to learn more about how we keep the trails accessible for users throughout the year. Staff will provide training on hand tool safety and guide volunteers in performing typical maintenance activities. This project is an excellent opportunity for first-time volunteers!

Project difficulty: MODERATE (1.5 mi hiking with tools)

This project will require shuttling and sharing a vehicle with staff and other volunteers. Please arrive on time and be available to stay for the entire project.

We will be removing 4 failing benches and installing two new Midpen standard benches. Tasks include materials transport, digging foundation holes, bench assembly, and concrete preparation. Staff will provide training on hand tool safety and guide volunteers in performing the work. This project is an excellent opportunity for first-time volunteers who feel capable of meeting the physical demands.

Join Midpen staff for a trail maintenance workday at El Corte de Madera Creek Open Space Preserve on the Virginia Mill Trail. We will be focused on "brushing," trimming back vegetation in the trail corridor, on this mostly redwood-shaded trail. This is an opportunity to learn more about how we keep the trails accessible for users throughout the year. Staff will provide training on hand tool safety and guide volunteers in performing typical maintenance activities. This project is an excellent opportunity for first-time volunteers!

Project difficulty: MODERATE (up to 1.5 mi hiking with tools)

This project will require shuttling and sharing a vehicle with staff and other volunteers. Please arrive on time and be available to stay for the entire project.

What You Will Need

To get the most out of your day with us, please bring or wear the following:

Sturdy shoes (no sandals or open-toed shoes) and long socks Layered clothing: long pants, long-sleeved shirt, jacket, etc. Gear appropriate for that day’s weather (hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, rain gear, etc.) Snacks, lunch, refillable water bottles/bladder, with at least 2 liter/quart capacity A small pack with shoulder straps to hold the above items, as you'll need your hands available to carry tools

Join Midpen staff for a fun workday of removing invasive French broom  in Bear Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve. Staff will provide training on plant identification, removal techniques, and education about why we want to remove this plant from our local landscape. This project is an excellent opportunity for first-time volunteers!

All minors under the age of 18 must provide parent/guardian approval (signed Volunteer Agreement and Release of Liability form) prior to the project day and be accompanied by a parent/adult for the duration of the volunteer project. Minor children may not be dropped off at a project.

Meeting Location

Enter Bear Creek Redwoods on Alma College Rd. through gate BC12, approximately half mile south of Bear Creek Rd. on Rte. 17. There will be a "Yellow Volunteer Project" sign to indicate where to turn and where to park. This is not a public access gate.  Please arrive on time since will not be able to access the preserve after 9:30 am.
