Volunteer Trail Patrol

Who We Are

Volunteer Trail Patrol (VTP) provide a valuable resource to both visitors and staff as they interact with other preserve visitors, report trail conditions, and assist with various targeted outreach efforts throughout all Midpen open space preserves.

What We Do

      • Volunteers in this role are primarily 'self-guided' and incorporate the role of VTP into their usual hikes and/or rides throughout the preserve.
      • Make contact with preserve visitors and provide helpful information about trail safety and etiquette, directions, and ideas for enjoyment.
      • Occasionally respond to and assist rangers with directed outreach, trail surveys, and information dissemination
      • Monitor and report preserve and trail conditions and hazards that require staff attention

Training

      • Training may be offered either over 2-3 evenings OR as a single day event, depending on staff schedules and availability. Training for this public contact role is offered in-person only.
      • During informative training sessions, you'll learn how to identify and report potential trail hazards and the standards for  greeting preserve visitors as a Midpen ambassador.
      • Training is offered annually in spring or summer based on program capacity and staff availability.

      Requirements

          • We ask for a commitment of one year with an average of one self-directed patrol and report monthly
          • Must be at least 18 years of age, submit a program application for review, and complete a Volunteer Agreement and Waiver and Release of Liability form.
          • Must attend the full program onboarding and training.
