Community Group Steward

Who We Are

Community Group Stewards (CGS) are community-led associations, nonprofit organizations, high school/college groups, culturally specific groups, businesses, and other groups with an interest in volunteering together as a team in support of our ongoing volunteer stewardship efforts.

What We Do

      • Habitat restoration
      • Fence construction and repair
      • Trail improvement
      • Maintenance projects

Training

      • No experience is necessary
      • Midpen will provide tools, protective equipment and training as well as water and snacks
      • New volunteer groups traditionally begin with habitat restoration projects. Trail and fence work may be scheduled for returning groups or those with more technical experience
      • During lunch, our field staff are available to discuss and answer questions about Midpen and the preserves

Ready to Get Involved?

Complete the online Project Request Form and provide as much detail as possible so we can match you with the best project for your group! Minimum age is generally 14 with occasional project work appropriate for aged 12 years and up; parent/guardian approval and participation required.  Minimum group size is 6 people; smaller groups please register as individuals on one of our Land Steward Opportunities. Due to staffing ratio, logistics, and site specifics, most of our project sites are limited in size to 12 people with a few sites annually that can accommodate more (when additional staffing is available for required monitoring).
We generally need a minimum of 6-8 weeks lead time depending on where we are in our planning season. Please note our internal planning schedule for each season:

      • January 1 - start of spring (April, May, June) project planning
      • April 1 - start of summer (July, August, September) project planning
      • July 1 - start of fall (October, November, December) project planning
      • October 1 - start of winter (January, February, March) project planning

Once program staff receive your request, they will assess the group, soil conditions and identified priority project needs, and provide you with a list of several options. Once all group and other projects decisions are finalized for the season, a program lead will coordinate with the group leaders on project details.
